Episode +17—What if…?
U2 became a band 50 years ago this week! As a longtime fan, I like to think about the many ways U2 has changed my life. But that goes hand in hand with a dreadful kind of awe: so many random things had to happen to bring our four heroes together. What if even one of those random things failed to fall into place?

Apologies to Adam and Larry! Uh, maybe Bono stayed in touch with them following their departure from the Prunes, and at some point they sat in with U2 for a laugh. And they discovered that U2 was even better with all four of them. Yeah! That’s what happened.
Thanks to PJ for advising me on the direction of this cartoon. A few weeks ago, it was headed into a very dark place, and she (easily) convinced me to find another way. She was absolutely right! Two brains are better than one, and this month we’re celebrating 6 years as Achtoonbaby’s collaborators. :)
This Achtoonbaby cartoon was created using real art supplies by a human woman with eyes, hands, a brain, a sense of humor, TIME, and a lot of love for U2. All references for this cartoon are from old (and a few recent) press photos—too many to dig up and credit, but I altered them substantially. I have no idea what Mrs. Clayton looked like, so I decided to make her gorgeous. Shoutout to Raphael’s cherubs.
All illustrations were made with watercolor, pencil, and ink on low-quality card stock that can’t handle a whole lot of water. This explains any waviness you might see here and there. Also my scanner doesn’t know how to “read” plain white paper, and sometimes it invents very light colored lines where there are none. I decided to just go with it.
Thanks to U2 for being my favorite band since I was a teenager and giving me something to do for almost 25 years.
